What a small business website costs in Massachusetts in 2026
Straight numbers from a local web designer: what you'll pay to build a site, what it costs every month after, and the questions that keep you from overpaying.
Ask three web designers what a website costs and you'll get three answers that don't look anything alike. One says $500, one says $5,000, one won't give you a number until you sit through a call. Here's how the pricing actually breaks down in 2026, so you can tell a fair quote from a bad one.
The short answer
Most local businesses in Massachusetts land somewhere between $1,500 and $12,000 to build a website, plus a monthly cost to keep it running. Where you land depends on who builds it and how much of the work you're willing to do yourself.
| Who builds it | Upfront | Every month |
|---|---|---|
| You, on a builder like Wix or Squarespace | $0 | About $17 to $50 |
| A freelance designer | $1,500 to $8,000 | $0 to $50 for hosting |
| A small agency | $6,000 to $12,000 | $50 to $200 for upkeep |
| A full-service agency | $12,000 to $35,000+ | $200 to $500 retainer |
What actually drives the price
Page count is the big one. A five-page site (home, services, about, contact and one more) is a different job than a site with a page for every service and every town you work in. More pages means more writing, more design and more photos to sort through.
- Custom or template. A template gets you online fast. A custom site is designed around your business, so it doesn't look like the guy down the road who bought the same theme.
- Who writes the words. If you hand over finished copy, the price drops. Most owners don't have time, so good designers write it with you.
- Features. A quote form is standard. Online booking, a store or a customer login add real cost.
- Local search setup. Things like town pages, Google Search Console and the behind-the-scenes code that tells Google what you do and where. Skip this and the site looks nice but nobody finds it.
The monthly costs nobody mentions
The build is one number. The site also costs money every month, and this is where people get surprised.
- Domain: about $10 to $20 a year for a .com.
- Hosting and security: keeping the site online, backed up and patched. On a builder it's part of the plan. With a designer it's usually a monthly plan.
- Changes: new prices, new photos, a new service. Some designers include a little time each month, some bill by the hour.
- Email: a professional address like you@yourbusiness.com is usually a separate monthly cost.
A safe rule: budget at least $500 a year for upkeep even on a simple site. If someone tells you a site costs nothing after launch, ask who's patching it.
What we charge at KingsWay
I post my prices because I'd want them posted if I were shopping. A site is $2,500 for 5 pages, $3,500 for 8 pages or $4,500 for 11 pages. Then a monthly plan from $59 that covers hosting, security, backups and upkeep. Full details are on the pricing page.
Most local businesses pick 8 pages with the $99 Growth plan. That's about $4,700 in year one and $1,188 a year after. Before you pay anything, I build a free mock of your site so you can see exactly what you're getting.
Seven questions to ask any web designer
- Who owns the domain? (It should be registered in your name.)
- Do I see the design before I pay?
- What does it cost every month, and what does that cover?
- How are changes billed after launch?
- What happens if I cancel? Do I get my content?
- Will the site show up for my town on Google, and how?
- When will it be live?
Quick answers
How much does a 5-page website cost?
From a freelancer or small studio, usually $1,500 to $4,000. At KingsWay a 5-page site is $2,500, plus a monthly plan from $59.
Is it cheaper to build it myself on Wix?
Upfront, yes. A builder runs about $17 to $50 a month. You trade money for your own time, and you're the one keeping it updated and making it show up on Google.
Do I have to pay every month for a website?
Some monthly cost is unavoidable: hosting, security and the domain. What varies is whether changes and support are included.
